I qould like to hear everyones opinion on who/what you would nominate for the following awards (if they existed) for Newsvine for last year:

Best Article

Best Author

Best Seed

Best Moderator

R.A.V. nominee

Sorry, but I must exclude the Newsvine Staff from the above because they have a distinct advantage over other users but I have a special category for them:

Best Staff piece

I plan to tally up the results and offer a Poll to vote for the top nominees soon.  Nominations are only open until the end of January and then the nominations will close.

R.A.V. poll: Not saying they will actually get a RAV Award if they won, but do you think some kind of poll should be run by the Administrators to be able for the Community to nominate/vote for the people they think are deserving of the RAV Award?

Best Article: any of Socrates' articles on 1st Amendment, Constitution, etc. Although I disagree with his positions and his responses were too oft demeaning, the discussion of the subject is always worthwhile and his efforts more than admirable.

Best Author: Dowser, most notably in 2010 for "Grandpa's Bedtime Stories."

Best Seed: Anything by Carloz . (Too vague, I know - just too many to choose.)

Best Moderator: Soph. Nobody responds to critics as sweetly.

R.A.V. Nominee: A Mac for sharing everything he knows in words and pictures.

Ah buhlieve you might considah anothah category of recognition, one for photography. There ah some quite talented photagraphuz heah, in many different styles -- realistic, journalistic, creative retouching, humah, fohced perspective, etc -- but shorely someone ought to be recognized. Perhaps Ben Josephs could be recognized as an all-round photographuh.

And then again perhaps we all might take a moment to considah the contributions of cartooncat for her consistent ability to unearth the not merely humorous, but the most peculiah seeds from around the world. (that is, Odd News)

Ah might nominate mahself for just being the all-round creative tahp yet one who nevah manages to poke her head into the uppah echelons of meritorious service. Ah liked mah Spud Henge and Pyramid des Pommes de Terre as weirdest stuff yo evah saw on Newsvine, but bow to the superiah efforts of othahs who share this cybahspace.

Yes! And of course, "The Squidget Chronicles." For all the complaints re this site, there is certainly an abundance of good material, good writers. You have to be willing to find it, to appreciate all of it. Scott Butki had that monthly series where various Viners were recognized; I loved that. And E. Goode had a year-end awards "ceremony." These articles are a great way to look back and appreciate the talent which, imo, is unique to Newsvine...we are not SodaHead!

Not just good material and writers...but good, uplifting stuff, too. It's a shame it gets buried in all of the political hooey.

In checking the date, the article I cited earlier by Dowser was written in 2010. I regret my error and will nominate Dowser's "Cat Classics" for the 2011 award. I believe this is the first time a comedy has been nominated :)

RAV nominee yes we do need one even if they don't receive anything from the administrators. It will give us a clue of who could be in the future be a real RAV member. My nomination I don't know how old all his video's are but would be McSpocky's NV videos that explain how to do things on the site.

I applaud any effort to get new and/or additional awards for Newsvine Columnists. Such a process could lead to higher quality writing and a more closely knit Community. I am hesitant to make nominations or mention particular names as I would prefer awards go to Authors based on content rather than personalities.

I would also like to point out that we could be using the Vote and the up arrow on comments to enrich the Newsvine experience. With that, I hereby up arrow everybody commenting here.

I should point out what the RAV is about. From the Wall of Vineness page:

Following is a historical record of all Random Acts of Vineness recognized by Newsvine for exceptional moments of greatness within the community.

Not all Acts are created equal, of course, and no one should assume that any item on this list is any more or less important than any other item. The list is simply a way of documenting some of the outstanding things achieved by members of the Newsvine community. It could be helping a charitable cause, writing a wildly popular article, developing a tool to better use Newsvine, or a host of other things. If you'd like to nominate a fellow Newsvine member for a Random Act of Vineness, please contact us.

It's not the Oscars. It's not awarded by category or year. It's given for an exceptional moment of greatness - hence the word 'random.'

Best Author Enoch- His articles and those with co-writers are well written

Best Seed bore-head brought to our attention the massive problems facing US fishermen

Best Moderator Dennis P McMann - his moderating is well known, I can't add to it :)

R.A.V. nominee Carloz - He has 'gone the distance since 2008, seeding, moderating, and often taken for granted but we would really miss him if he ever left NV. :)

"Best Seed" - that's a difficult one. "Best Seeder", instead. Some seeders are far better than others at introducing a story as well as providing thoughtful comments to accompany it.

I've liked American Idle's seeds about the situation in Wisconsin. She's provided detail, commentary, and first-hand observation accounts to her seeded articles.

A few moments ago I had this crazy idea for awards. I guess you could branch this off into something else also. Here it goes I was thinking of determining the best Author for each state, and then one for International authors. It would allow a better sense of how big NV is spread out our community is.

Again just a crazy idea from shub
