I saw on the news last week where a parent was arrested for allowing teens to drink at a party at their house hosted by their kid. I want to be able to let my kids and their friends drink alcohol at home--with their friend's parents permission of course. They are all under the age of 21. Notice I didn't say I wanted to buy it for them; I said I wanted to allow them to consume it here, where I can watch them. I want to know they won't be trying to drive home drunk or catching a ride from a friend who is also drunk. I want to know that the drinking games they will be playing won't kill them with alcohol poisoning. Call me crazy if you want.
I want my kids to be able to do their dope at home. Smoke it, snort it, shoot it, or huff it. This doesn't mean I want them to be dopeheads. I want to be there if they overdose instead of depending on their dealer or their wasted buddies to call 911. Somehow I believe I will be more interested in their surviving and I even believe my CPR and First Aid Certifications would be more useful than someone slapping them saying "Wake up dude" while they foam at the mouth and convulse. Call me stupid.
I want these things not because I think kids should be doing dope and drinking, but because I know that some will regardless of what we as parents tell them they can or can't do. For most, placing something off-limits makes it all that more desirable. Nothing sweeter than the taste of the taboo fruit...not that any of US would know anything about that, right? They will experiment no matter how much I warn them of the hangovers and withdrawal symptoms. The crashes and burns will just be bogey-monster tales to them--until they try it of course. Their first foray will be a minor one with a couple of drinks or a toke or two; maybe a small bump of coke or meth. Nothing really major and the after-effects probably won't even be felt the next day which will only make them believe all the more that I'm just trying to scare them with those bogey-man tales of crushing headaches, or worse.
So why can't I allow them, nay-insist-they party under my roof or even the roof of trusted co-parents of their friends? JAIL TIME!!! Yep, you go to jail if you allow kids to party withy your knowledge. It is far better that you be blind to what they are doing. It is better to let them kill other innocent victims while getting home. It is better they die in an alleyway with a syringe hanging from their arm. It is better that they should get raped when they are too drunk to know what is going on. It is far better that they be around self-centered egotisrical competitive youths with little to no knowledge of what can happen when you over-indulge than to be around sober, loving, experienced adults.
Now what is wrong with this picture???
Keep the bans on teen drinking or selling alcohol to underaged kids if you want although I think these are stupid as well. I can send my kid off to die or kill men, women, or kids with full-auto weapons while their friends sit in silos waiting to turn a key to push the buttons to end mankind--but they can't have a beer? Really? Let them assume the responsibility for their actions. I have no problem with that. Crinializing parents for providing a safe place for their irresponsibility where they are supervised while being the kids are being stupid? Not a big fan. Of course I also believe that forcing children to choose between illegal drugs readily available and easily purchased with no manufacturing quality control over alcohol with production standards is pretty dumb too; but that is for another day and time to discuss.
